VEG ABROAD-new feature!
Cheap and no meat
Local Vegetarian cuisine for the budget conscious and culturally curious traveller.
Current feature:
Ethiopian Edibles

Ethiopia can be a haven for both the vegetarian and vegan traveler. For about 250 days of the year Orthodox Christians fast, eating no meat, fat, eggs or dairy. I was fortunate to be traveling in Ethiopia during Lent.

SNACKS ON THE GO
Healthy eating options at airports

Although most airlines serve meals on long haul flights, there are other reasons you may wish to have snacks-on-the-go:
  • a long transit time
  • delayed flight or connection
  • *limited in-flight service

These situations can leave you with a growling stomach and make it necessary to eat while you are waiting to board your flight. Healthy and reasonably priced options are limited and for the vegetarian a challenge to find.

In this section I will feature different airports where I suss out the snack situation. Keep in mind this is a guide only. Things change and information is only accurate at time of publication. If you have any additions or amendments feel free to contact me so that I can pass it on for all of our readers to share.

*When flying within Canada, domestic carriers have sustenance for sale but will provide a complimentary yet highly processed, salty or sweet snack along with a sugary beverage. You can always request water. Although important for hydration water is certainly not satiating.

Background to Urban Walks
Welcome to our new column! This section will bring you adventures periodically on travel, active living and healthy eating habits.

Ever since I was a kid I walked. (My dad walks too so maybe that's where I get it from.)

My first epic adventure on foot was in Toronto where I walked from the intersection of Yonge and Dundas streets all the way home-a whopping 20 km! This only fueled my desire to walk further. Along the way were many distractions to keep my mind occupied-my walkman to listen to, interesting sights to see and the occasional food store to keep up my energy levels on my walk.

I continued my walking ways when I moved to Vancouver. This was a different kind of urban centre where the main attraction was Stanley Park and the chocolate shop where I worked!

When traveling overseas, the first thing I like to do when arriving in a new city is to walk. It stretches the legs and helps to shake off the jet lag. It also orients me to the look and feel of a place. Exploration by foot gives you an insight that tour buses and rental cars can only hope to achieve.

Of course any type of physical activity requires the right amount and type of nutrition to provide and sustain energy for the journey. When walking I often focus on the amazing food that I discover along the way. This food not only keeps me going but it also becomes the souvenir that stays with me long after the trip is over.

Hence, the creation of this column-walking for exploration, exercise and eating. In keeping with the spirit of Staying Healthy Abroad Naturally I will add my own healthy twist to the foods I encounter.
